Key Features and Components
Total-Etch Protocol Required
This adhesive system is specifically designed to be used with the Total-Etch technique. The tooth surface—both enamel and dentin—must first be conditioned using a separate phosphoric acid etchant (such as the B&E Etching Agent), which is then thoroughly rinsed away. After rinsing, the dentin surface is left slightly moist, following the principle of wet bonding.
Two Steps, One Bottle System
Although the bonding procedure consists of two clinical steps, the system utilizes only one adhesive bottle. The two steps are:
-
Etching and rinsing using a separate phosphoric acid etchant.
-
Application of XS Bond, which contains the combined primer and adhesive in a single solution.
Composition (Primer/Adhesive Combination)
The single bottle contains a carefully balanced blend of hydrophilic monomers (such as HEMA) that act as the primer, allowing penetration into the demineralized dentin and collagen network. It also includes hydrophobic monomers that function as the adhesive, forming a strong hybrid layer and creating the final resin seal.
High Bond Strength
When used properly with the Total-Etch protocol, XS Bond provides excellent mechanical bonding to etched enamel and a reliable hybrid bond with dentin. This results in a durable seal that effectively resists microleakage and enhances restoration longevity.
Solvent Carrier System
The adhesive utilizes a volatile solvent, typically ethanol or acetone, to carry the monomers deep into the dentinal tubules. Careful air-thinning is essential to completely evaporate the solvent and maximize adhesive resin concentration before light curing.
Thin Film Thickness
After curing, XS Bond forms a very thin adhesive film, which is critical for ensuring accurate seating of both direct and indirect restorations without affecting restoration fit.
Clinical Importance
The B&E XS Bond (5th Generation Bonding System) offers an ideal balance between high bond strength—achieved through the separate etching step—and procedural simplicity—enabled by the single-bottle primer/adhesive design. It is a highly versatile adhesive, suitable for:
-
Direct composite restorations
-
Bonding amalgam
-
Sealing dentin for indirect restorations
