Universal Curette Design

The Columbia 2R–2L is a universal curette primarily used for the removal of supragingival and subgingival calculus (tartar) and for root planing during periodontal scaling procedures. Its design allows it to be used effectively throughout the dentition.

Blade Characteristics

The working end features double cutting edges on each blade (Right and Left), enabling effective scaling on both mesial and distal surfaces without changing instruments. The rounded toe distinguishes it from scalers, making it safer and less traumatic for subgingival insertion and maneuvering. The blade’s working surface is positioned at approximately a 90° angle to the lower shank, which is characteristic of universal curettes and facilitates proper adaptation to the tooth surface.

2R–2L Designation and Anterior Focus

The 2R–2L configuration is generally intended for use on anterior teeth, including incisors and canines. Compared to posterior curettes such as the 4R–4L, the 2R–2L has a less angled shank and a blade size that adapts well to the narrower, straighter surfaces of the anterior region.

Shank and Blade Dimensions

The terminal shank is relatively long, which improves access to the lower anterior teeth, particularly when the patient is positioned supine. The blade is typically shorter and thicker than that of a Gracey curette, providing sufficient strength for the removal of light to moderate calculus deposits.
