Primary Function
The A-Titan Williams Periodontal Probe is used to gently measure the depth of the gingival sulcus or periodontal pocket around a tooth. These measurements are essential for the diagnosis, classification, and monitoring of periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as for evaluating treatment outcomes over time.
Williams Calibration Markings
The probe features the classic Williams measurement pattern, which is widely recognized as a clinical standard:
-
Marked millimeter measurements: 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, and 10 mm
-
Unmarked gaps at 4 mm and 6 mm, which are the defining characteristic of the Williams design and allow for rapid visual estimation of pocket depth
Visibility and Color Coding
The measurement markings are permanently etched or engraved onto the stainless steel and are typically color-coded (commonly black). This enhances readability under operatory lighting and when the probe tip is submerged in the periodontal pocket.
Tip Design and Patient Safety
The working end is thin, flexible, and blunt-tipped, allowing the probe to slide gently to the base of the pocket with minimal tissue trauma. The rounded tip ensures accurate depth measurement while maintaining patient comfort.
Material and Durability
The instrument is manufactured from high-quality medical-grade stainless steel, often sourced from German or French steel. This ensures excellent corrosion resistance, long service life, and full compatibility with repeated autoclave sterilization.
Ergonomic Handle Design
A-Titan probes commonly feature a hollow, ergonomic handle with a textured or knurled grip. This design provides a lightweight, non-slip feel, helping clinicians maintain the recommended light probing force (approximately 10–20 g) for accurate and atraumatic examinations.
Available Configurations
The A-Titan Williams Probe is available in multiple configurations to suit different clinical preferences:
-
Single-Ended: One working end featuring the Williams probe
-
Double-Ended (Combination Instrument): Typically combines a Williams probe on one end and a dental explorer (e.g., #23 Shepherd’s Hook) on the opposite end (e.g., A-Titan Williams Probe 23)
