Material Composition
Gutta percha points are primarily composed of a carefully balanced material mixture. The main component is gutta percha, a natural rubber-based polymer that provides the bulk and plasticity of the point. Zinc oxide is added as a filler to increase stiffness and structural stability. Heavy metal salts, such as barium sulfate, are incorporated to provide radiopacity, allowing the points to be clearly visible on radiographs for verification of obturation length and quality. In addition, waxes and resins are included to improve handling characteristics and flow properties when the material is heated.
Precision and Taper (ISO Standardization)
Aceondent gutta percha points are manufactured with high dimensional accuracy and strictly adhere to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) specifications. This ensures precise matching with standardized NiTi rotary file sizes and tapers such as 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06. Accurate taper matching results in a tighter and more predictable fit within the shaped root canal.
Uniform Consistency and Handling
The points are designed to exhibit excellent firmness and a smooth surface texture, allowing for easy insertion and effective lateral or vertical condensation. When heated, the material becomes malleable, enabling it to adapt precisely to the complex internal anatomy of the root canal system, including fins and irregularities.
Alpha and Beta Phases
Aceondent gutta percha points are typically produced in the more rigid Beta phase, which is ideal for cold lateral compaction techniques. However, they perform excellently in warm obturation techniques, such as warm vertical compaction, where the material transitions into the more flowable Alpha phase upon heating. This allows superior filling of accessory canals and anatomical irregularities.
Length Marking for Clinical Accuracy
Many Aceondent points include precise millimeter measurement markings along their length. These markings provide a quick visual reference for depth of insertion, reducing reliance solely on apex locators or rubber stoppers and enhancing clinical accuracy during obturation.
Biocompatibility
The materials used in Aceondent gutta percha points are highly biocompatible and chemically inert, minimizing the risk of irritation or adverse tissue reactions in the periapical region and supporting long-term periapical health.
