1. Air Motor (The Power Source)

The air motor is the pneumatic engine of the system and connects directly to the dental unit’s hose, usually via a 2-hole or 4-hole connection. It supplies the rotational power required to operate the attached handpieces. The motor delivers stable, adjustable speeds typically ranging from 20,000 to 27,000 RPM, along with high torque. It also commonly features forward and reverse directional control for enhanced procedural flexibility.

2. Straight Handpiece (Nosecone)

The straight handpiece attaches directly to the air motor and is used for procedures that require straight-line access and precise control. It is most commonly used for extra-oral applications such as trimming and polishing acrylic in the dental lab, as well as for certain chairside adjustments using long-shank burs. This handpiece accepts standard long-shank HP (handpiece) burs with a 2.35 mm shank diameter.

3. Contra-Angle Handpiece (Latch-Type)

The contra-angle handpiece connects to the air motor and features a bent-neck design that allows easy intra-oral access to posterior teeth and lingual surfaces. It is the primary tool for polishing, fine finishing, soft caries excavation, and traditional endodontic procedures before the introduction of dedicated endodontic motors. It uses a latch-type (RA) chuck mechanism that securely holds short-shank latch burs, prophylaxis cups, and brushes with a 2.35 mm shank diameter.
