I. Key Features and Technical Precision
Automatic Apical Stop and Reverse
The motor is designed to automatically stop or reverse file rotation when the apical limit is reached. This advanced safety feature prevents accidental over-instrumentation and significantly reduces the risk of canal perforation or file breakage.
Brushless DC Motor
The system utilizes a high-efficiency, quiet Japanese brushless DC motor. This technology provides smooth and stable torque delivery across a typical speed range of 100–1,000 RPM, operates with minimal noise, and offers a much longer operational lifespan compared to conventional brushed motors.
Safety Torque Control
An advanced electronic circuit allows the operator to pre-set precise torque limits, usually ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 N·cm. When resistance exceeds the selected limit, the motor automatically activates safety responses such as auto-reverse, auto-forward, or auto-stop to protect the file from separation inside the root canal.
Multiple Working Modes
The unit includes a variety of pre-set and customizable operating modes. These include continuous rotation in forward and reverse directions for conventional rotary systems, reciprocating motion that significantly reduces file stress, and customizable memory presets—often ten or more programs—to store specific speed and torque values for different NiTi file systems.
II. Ergonomics and Workflow
Cordless and Lightweight Design
The handpiece features a cordless, ergonomic design powered by a rechargeable lithium battery. This ensures maximum maneuverability and significantly reduces hand fatigue during prolonged endodontic procedures. Many models also support convenient wireless charging through a dedicated base unit.
Slim Contra-Angle Head
The motor is equipped with a slim, 360-degree rotatable contra-angle head, commonly with a 6:1 or 16:1 reduction ratio. The compact head design enhances visibility of the operating field, particularly in posterior regions where access is limited.
Hygienic Autoclavable Components
The contra-angle handpiece head is detachable and fully autoclavable at temperatures up to 135°C. This ensures strict infection control and compliance with clinical sterilization standards.
Clear Digital Display
An OLED or LCD digital display provides a clear, real-time readout of critical operating parameters, including speed, torque, battery status, and file position when the apex locator is activated.
